Education & Training Update – July 2008

WPC2008

The main activity this past month has been the World’s Poultry Congress, for which I was the Coordinator of the Youth Program, including the post-congress tour. Fifty-eight young people from 30 different countries participated in the Youth Program, including two of our Poultry CRC Postgraduate Students, Barbara Konsak and Adam Sacranie.

The Youth Program Post-Congress tour followed the congress when we all piled onto a bus to visit a chicken meat hatchery and broiler shed, a free range layer facility, including the egg grading floor, and looked at older style and modern cage layer facilities from the road. The tour group stayed in Yandina, Toowoomba, Armidale and Ballina. In Toowoomba, at the University of Southern Queensland’s McGregor College, we were joined by AECL/CRC Extension Officer Geof Runge who gave presentations about the Australian egg and chicken meat industries. The weather was wet for the first few days of the tour, but by the time we reached the beach at Ballina, it was bright and sunny. That, coupled with a stop at Main Beach on the Gold Coast on the way back to Brisbane, convinced the program participants that Australia was, after all, a land of sunshine.

Thanks are due to the industry personnel who gave so generously of their time when we visited their facilities, the staff of Murrays Travel and all the people who assisted with accommodation and meals.

Avian Health OnLine

I have just heard from Course Coordinator, Dr. Trevor Bagust, that Rolando Guerrero, Nirman Minhas and Brian Burke have successfully completed Unit 3 of Avian Health OnLine and Andrew Walsh has successfully completed Unit 1. All of them have received scholarships from the Poultry CRC to complete these studies.

With best wishes,

Julie
