Partitioning Variation for Power Analyses

Partitioning Variation for Power Analyses

Whenever experiments are conducted with birds, or other animals, researchers first decision to make is the desired experimental unit.  The experimental unit may be individuals housed separately, or several individuals housed together.

When individuals are housed separately, variation due to the genetics of different birds and location effects due to different microclimates are confounded.  Even the best of research facilities have slight differences in microclimates, the temperature, humidity, and ventilation that individuals are exposed to.  Also, when animals are housed individually, there are no social interactions like there would be under commercial conditions.  Social interactions are especially important for determining feed intake and inter-bird heat passage.

When birds or animals are housed together in pens, it is possible to mathematically separate the effects of genetic variation and location, or pen.  This workbook can produce projected power curves from inputted experimental data.
