Industry Update Report for Avian Influenza
UPDATE – Restrictions for H7 Avian Influenza Near Euroa – 31 March 2025. 250331_MR_Avian influenza order changes
Agriculture Victoria has detected H7N8 avian influenza (bird flu) at four commercial poultry farms near Euroa, northern Victoria. This is a new outbreak, unrelated to the 2024 cases in Victoria, New South Wales, and the ACT. The strain differs from the H5 virus affecting other parts of the world.
Response & Control Measures
- Quarantine & Eradication: Affected farms are quarantined under the Livestock Disease Control Act 1994 (Vic). Measures include humane culling of infected birds, strict movement controls, and intensive surveillance.
- Movement Restrictions: A 5 km restricted area is in place around infected properties in Euroa, within a wider control zone across Strathbogie Shire (east of the Goulburn Valley Highway).
- No movement of birds, bird products (eggs, manure, meat), or poultry equipment without a permit.
- Vehicles transporting these items can use the Hume Freeway but cannot stop or deviate in restricted areas.
- Poultry owners with 50+ birds in restricted areas must keep them housed.

- Prevent contact between domestic and wild birds.

- Low human health risk, unless in close contact with infected birds.
- Supermarket and butcher-sold poultry products remain safe to eat.
