The Cayuga is a hardy, quiet, docile and dual-purpose breed (they are also used for ornamental purposes). They have a black bill and black plumage which, in the correct light, appears an iridescent beetle green. The Cayuga duck has dark brown eyes, black shanks and toes, however, some orange shading may appear in older drakes. Ducklings have black plumage. Breeding for ornamental purposes has emphasised correct colouration, carriage and the presence of a large breast.
