The Rouen produces high-quality meat and are known to be good foragers. The Rouen strongly resembles a Mallard as they have a green head, white collar, deep claret breast and blue speculum feathers. However, the speculum feathers are brighter and larger in size than a Mallard. The bill is yellowish-green in the Rouen drake and orange in the duck. In North America, there are two distinct types that are bred. The production-bred variety is larger than a Mallard but has a typical duck conformation and the standard-bred variety is much larger again.
